Fans of both sides suffered in silence for most of this dismal game, which displayed a dearth of quality in all areas of field of play.

A 21st minute snap-shot by Owen Coyle slipped past Allan McGregor's right-hand post. Two minutes late Saints nearly went behind but Kevin Rutkiewicz headed Kevin Barkey's lob of f the line to keep the sides level.

At the other end, Airdrie's Mark McGeown was forced to make a solitary first half save seconds before the half-time whistle when Paul Sheerin created space for himself by nut-megging Martin Hardie and shooting from a tight angle.

The second half was little better but at least two goals were scored.

The home side were first to score, although the goal had an element of fortune about it. Substitute Steven McConalogue had only had been on the field for seconds when the ball rebounded back to him from his first touch.

He sent in a low cross from the rebound that Airdrie central defender Kevin Christie swung a boot at and deflected past his own keeper from four yards.

Airdrie hit back and snatched a deserved equaliser with just three minutes left. Coyle received Marvyn Wilson's midfield through ball under close marking from Sean Webb and Kevin Rutkiewicz, but the golden oldie broke clear to shoot past McGregor from 16 yards and earn his side a well-deserved point.
