Having lost their opening league match last week at Airdie, the Saints were soundly beaten at home to Queen of South.

They lost 3-1 but could and should have been beaten by a greater margin.

Doonhamers David McNiven was star man scoring two and almost grabbing a hat-trick with minutes to go.

Striker partner Gary Wood scored the opener when former Saint Brian McLaughlin slipped the ball through to him. The striker was left all alone by a depleted back line and calmly drove the ball under the under the exposed on-loan keeper Allan McGregor.

McLaughlin was also involved in McNiven's first goal, slotting through a well-timed pass to the number nine to net from a tight angle.

The centre forward grabbed his own second and the club's third with just over 15 minutes to go.

Full back Eric Paton passed the ball to David Bagan on the edge of the Saints box and the right midfielder cleverly diverted the ball into McNiven's path.

With the Saints central defenders Kevin Rutkiewicz and Ian Maxwell missing yet again McNiven drilled tha ball into the net pst Allan McGregor to make it 3-nil.

Saints pulled one back when substitute Martyn Fotheringham thunded the ball into the Doonhamers goal from 25 yards.
